·        When beads are being thrown, and they end up on the ground near you and you want to pick them up, put your foot on them first, and then reach for them to avoid having your hand stepped on by someone. Teach your children this same practice as well.

·        There are barricades set up along the parade routes. They are there to keep everyone safe. Vehicles pulling floats, marching bands, and dance teams need to be able to watch where they are going and not watch out for excited spectators running out in the street. The Galveston Police take this very seriously to ensure your safety.

·        Mardi Gras in Galveston is family oriented. However, if you bring your children to Mardi Gras keep them close to you at all times. Because of the size of the crowd, children can be easily separated from the parents. Always watch what your children catch, especially toddlers and infants who can choke on broken beads and trinkets. Make sure you remind your children to stay out of the street during parades. Accidents happen when floats are unable to make sudden stops.

·        Mardi Gras is huge, thousands of people are on the street, and it is very easy to get separated. Make sure everyone knows where to meet in case anyone gets lost; and give your children note cards with your name, address, cell phone number, hotel information, and pre-arranged meeting place on them just in case. Teach your children to find a police officer in the event that they would get lost.

·        Leave your animals at home, unless they are registered entrants in the parades. Loud noises and crowded streets put undue stress on animals. The City of Galveston has an exotic animal ordinance that is strictly enforced. Remember, it’s is not fair to the animal, or the people who come down for Mardi Gras.

·        Do not wear expensive, or flashy jewelry to the Mardi Gras festivities. Women should keep from brining a purse if at all possible. Carry you wallet, ID, money, or credit cards in your front pants pocket.

·        If you plan to consume alcohol during the Mardi Gras festivities, please be safe if you drink. Remember, alcohol and safety must go hand-in-hand at all times, and you are an ideal target for criminals if you are intoxicated, especially if you are alone! In addition, public intoxication, underage drinking and DUI is a crime, and will be strictly enforced by the Galveston Police Department.

·        Glass, plastic or aluminum containers are not allowed into the downtown entertainment district. Ice chest, or coolers are not allowed as well. Alcohol cannot be brought into the downtown entertainment area, and backpacks, and large purses are subject to inspection.

·        Remember where you park you car. If you are not familiar with the area, write the location on a piece of paper, and keep it with you. What looks familiar during daylight hours is unfamiliar when the sun goes down. Also, do not leave any valuables in plain view to invite a criminal to break into your vehicle.
